European Sports Sponsorship Market Hits New Record

In 2022 it was reported that the European Sponsorship Market achieved a new record of around 22 billion dollars in revenue.  There are a lot of reasons for this to have happened and sports is certainly one of the main things that helped boost their revenue.  While it was thought that the pandemic may leave a negative result for the future of this market, it turns out that it did not really affect the growing amount of money that is brought in each year.  Sports is a big reason for this as big events such as the World Cup or the Winter Olympics have benefitted the Sponsorship Market.  "The Sponsorship Market pegged Spain and UK as the fastest growers, up 10-14 per cent respectively."  It was also noted that cryptocurrency and the lifting of the Covid 19 restrictions were main contributors to the market's success.  The European Sponsorship Association's chairman was quoted saying "It’s remarkable how well sponsorship has bounced back after the devastating effects of the pandemic, and we all enjoyed the full resumption of in-person sporting and cultural events that contributed to the regrowth of the sector in 2022."

Renewed commercial growth driven by FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were the main reasons that Spain was able to increase its market by about 14%.  And for England, the continued success of the Premier League was the main reason that they were able to grow their market by 10%.  Clearly soccer is the main source of European market success and I think that this probably is not going to change for a long time.  Although there is a lot of success attributed with the ESA, recent events such as Russia invading Ukraine have had a negative impact.  Cryptocurrency's instability could also be viewed as a negative thing going on but there is a lot of positive upside that crypto can bring to the table as well.

  1. It's truly amazing to see how resilient the European Sponsorship Market has been, especially with the comeback from the pandemic's challenges. The growth driven by sports specifically football in Spain and the UK, really showcases the power and appeal of sports sponsorships and how massive they are in society. This article is a reminder of the dynamic nature of this industry, where potential risks and opportunities both exist together. It'll be interesting to watch how these factors play out in shaping the future of sports sponsorships and I look forward to paying more attention to those things after reading this article.

  2. I think this shows how important sports are to people and the pandemic really brought that to a head. During the pandemic no one had anything to do, so this allowed sports to boom. Now as life ahs returned back to normal, people still have the love for sports. The sponsorships show exactly how much this increase was. As crypto comes into play, I could see the sponsorships increasing even more as more and more companies start transitioning to a more digital world.

  3. This post really highlights the importance of sports on the economy as a whole. As others highlighted, the decline of sports during Covid led to a decrease in sponsorships, which created worries that the market wouldn’t recover. However, I think the recovery of the industry after restrictions were lifted is a sign of how important sports are to people, especially football in Europe. Covid showed that the industry is not indestructible, but the resilience of fans and players helped it to recover.

    1. Thank you, the main goal of this article was to give an economic perspective of sponsorships. I also like how you looked at the pandemic as a way of showing that sports is almost indestructible and that even when times are bad, people will still find a way to support.

  4. I think this post highlights the ever-growing sports market in Europe. Ever since COVID-19, the world has come to realize how important sports are for society, and thus companies have been investing more of their money in sponsoring sports teams. I think one one point that you could have brought up in the article is the increase in US companies sponsoring European football clubs. Especially in the last few years, big US companies have tapped into the European sports market, which has been very interesting.

    1. Good to know, I did not realize that the US has started to take an interest in the European Sports Market. I will follow up on that and read some articles about which companies are getting involved in order to expand my knowledge. Thank you for the suggestion.

  6. Zach Lichtman - I learned a lot from this blog post about the European Sponsorship Market´s revenue and how it has been growing. Events like the World Cup and the Winter Olympics have been big factors in this growth. Big teams in Europe like FC Barcelona are teams that help grow the sponsorships in the markets. Different conflicts and advances in technology have been challenges and road blocks for sports sponsorships in Europe. It is clear that soccer is the leading industry, and this should be embraced because this is where the money is made and it is hard to change tradition in Europe.

    1. I am glad that you were able to learn something from my blog. I agree that sponsorships need to focus on the teams with a big market and a big fanbase as well. That is how they are going to continue to prosper. Also holding big events like football matches or the World Cup or the Olympics certainly would help as well.
